Lagazuoi Photo Award New Talents 2023

Three young photographers narrate side by side with Nikon the breathtaking landscape of Mount Lagazuoi

Over five days, three students from the Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia di Milano, and the Officine Fotografiche di Roma took part in the artist residency organised by Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti, taking photos and videos to capture the essence of the Dolomites with the support of a team of Nikon Creators as tutors.

This extraordinary experience has resulted in an exhibition that can be visited from 2nd September to 22nd October 2023

Cortina d'Ampezzo, 3rd August 2023_ They climbed over rocks, experimented with lenses and tripods and wore out the soles of their shoes on the hiking trails of Mount Lagazuoi in order to tell about their adventure on social media with pictures and stories.
And this is just the beginning: the three photographers who participated in the Lagazuoi Photo Award New Talents will soon be given the opportunity to exhibit their video and photo reportage created on this occasion. Their works will be the core of the exhibition, which will take place at the Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti, the high-tech exhibition centre at the top station of the Lagazuoi cable car, between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Alta Badia.

Three high schools have taken part in this project: the Accademia Carrara di Bergamo, the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia di Milano, and the Officine Fotografiche di Roma. Each of them selected a student to participate in an artist residency at high altitude last July: five field days at over 2700 metres of altitude, amidst a sometimes extreme landscape. And thanks to the partnership with Nikon Italia, the young people were accompanied by as many tutors, and three professional photographers from the #NikonCreators team: Mattia Bonavida, Samuele Cavicchi and Alberto Papagni. Each pair created a four-handed work, supported by the latest generation of instruments provided by the multinational company specialising in the photographic sector.

This experience has produced three different projects telling the story of the high mountains and Mount Lagazuoi from a creative, unique and different point of view. Since the beginning of July, during the artist residency, Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti's social media channels (#lagazuoidolomiti) have been enriched with stories and content with a continuous and engaging story flow from the participants.

The opening of the exhibition of the final projects is scheduled for Saturday 2nd September. On this occasion, a jury composed of Elisabetta Illy, photographer, CEO and founder of Picture of Change, Roberto Bachis, head of the Nikon School and training specialist, and Stefano Illing, creator of Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti, will crown the winner.

"With this project, we aim to give the public the emotion of an aesthetic rediscovery of the mountains, far from the prevailing visual clichés. We have chosen an original interpretation key, combining two elements that normally do not come together:
The unprejudiced gaze of three young people in their formation, dealing with a territory that is unknown to them, and the experience of the Nikon professionals, who are able to transform visions and images into a story. It is a "life experience", says Stefano Illing, creator of the Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti cultural pole and organiser of this project. "In this way we want to promote a mountain culture capable of looking forward, first and foremost to the new generations.

"Nikon has an ongoing commitment to photo and video education, providing support and advanced technologies to help photographers reflect their vision through images and videos. We couldn't miss the opportunity to support this important project aimed at rediscovering the mountain regions. An experience that reveals new perspectives, people, creativity and emotions," says Roberto Bachis, Nikon School Manager and Training Specialist at Nikon Italia. We would like to thank Lagazuoi EXPO Dolomiti for the involvement of our #NikonCreators, who acted as tutors to accompany, teach and introduce the students to the professional use of the Nikon Z System."
